His mother didn’t agree at the beginning, but he made her mind by the son’s solemn vow not to touch wine, women and meat.
Gandhi went to Bombay to take the boat. There, his caste people threatened to excommunicate him if he persisted in going abroad.
He didn’t care, and was formally excommunicated by his caste, but he went to England on September 4, 1888.
Few mouths earlier, his first son was born.
Firstly, he was surprised not only by the English people as the customs, being hard to stay. The fact that he was vegetarian only complicated even more.
The food difficult was solved when he found a vegetarian restaurant, and he became a vegetarian by choice and not because the vow he had taken.
The early period of his stay, he called “aping the English gentleman”, with new clothes, purchased a silk hat,etc..
He took lessons in French, and in elocution and learn ball-room dancing. But he soon realized that was a mistake, and that he couldn’t hide the real Gandhi.
He was introduced to Sir Edwin Arnold’s translation, to the Bible, Buddha’s life, etc… learning about others religions, and trying to comprehend more about then.
He went to India two days later after passed the examinations.
